Melanie Winter at LARWHP Kick Off

Wait a second…That’s not what happened at Dupar’s in Studio City.  Determined environmental advocate, Melanie Winter, officially kicked off the Los Angeles Rainwater Harvesting Project, after more than three years in the baking.  Guy Stivers of Stivers And Associates Landscape Architecture will lead the design team for developing a homeowner-friendly model approach to using rainwater as a resource.  Other team members include Marcus Castain of Generation Water providing irrigation auditing and retrofits, Mark Hanna of Geosyntec providing technical modeling, investigations, and monitoring, and Leigh Jerrard of Greywater Corps educating and advocating for residential graywater. G3 will provide Hands-on classes, coaching, and Site Evaluations to help people use their properties as healthy functioning watersheds that will gather rainwater as a resource.

A new study by the Economic Roundtable shows how investment that supports a watershed approach to rejuvenation sparks the local economic growth of good, high-wage jobs at least as much as does investment in housing construction or dam/large waterworks construction.

G3's Water Efficiency Professional Training Program For Generation Water

This research provides a keystone to the argument that environmental organizations have known for a long time, but to date have not been able to articulate in the numbers, that investment in watershed-based green infrastructure is a solid foundation for rebuilding the United States’ economy.  G3 has been providing watershed-based water efficiency education and training for ordinary citizens, policy makers, and landscape professionals for the past 3 years. Most recently we have become the sustainable landscaping training partner for Generation Water, a workforce development organization focused on developing young people for careers in water efficiency.  Looks like we’re ahead of the curve!  Join us and join this historic movement to rebuild our communities, cities, and national economy.

G3 Associate Jeff Adams Lays Out Sponge Garden

As part of G3′s week-long training for Generation Water (Water Efficiency Professional Training Program), the cohort works with G3 Associate, Jeff Adams to build a sponge garden at a residence in La Crescenta.

The cohort has performed a Site Evaluation of the site, and now Jeff is outlining the design of the earthworks that will hold most of the rainwater generated by the roof of the home. Part of the site had been sheet mulched earlier in the week.

Jeff next demonstrates laying out the swale that will greatly contribute to spreading out the water.  This part of the earthworks must be level to keep the water from flowing off either end.

The Swale Is Leveled To Spread IT!

After determining the depth and layout of both the swale, and each of the two basins that will gather the water before spreading it, everyone grabbed a shovel and began excavating according to the plan.

Generation Water July Class Gets Started

The first cohort of Generation Water and LA Conservation Corps. youth employees begin their week-long class in Attainable Sustainable Landscaping, provided by G3.

As part of Generation Water’s workforce development requirements under the State of California’s first Green Innovation Challenge (a $2.5 million grant to grow the water efficiency sector, train new entrants and incumbent employees, and place them into careers), G3 has created the Custom Seminar: Water Efficiency Professional Training Program. The Program comprises 35 hours of both in-classroom and hands-on instruction including Site Evaluation, Design, Stewardship, and Building a Sponge Garden in at a local residential site.
