G3’s design for the hillside Ocean Friendly Demonstration Garden at the Manhattan Beach Strand in Manhattan Beach, CA (corner of Manhattan Beach Blvd. and THE OCEAN!) is taking shape as local boulders and recycled concrete (provided by Manhattan Beach Public Works) begin to form the mini-basins that dot the landscape to grab rainwater as a resource and spread it around for the benefit of the CA native plants planned for the project.

Coir Mat Stabilizes The Hillside

The site is a very high profile site, subject to interaction with a lot of people visiting the local restaurants, bars, shops, and beach. Despite G3’s best efforts to keep the basins “light” on the earth, the City of Manhattan Beach required concrete footings for them as insurance against people running around on the hillside when the plants are young. The hillside is stabilized by both the basin footings and the application of a biodegradable coir erosion control blanket from North American Green.  After the planting is complete, a thick layer of fresh tree trimming mulch and compost tea will be applied to cover all of the erosion control blanket and begin to break everything down into Living Soil, the ultimate hillside stabilizer.

The concrete in the basins will be sprayed with a soy-based concrete stain to match the accompanying boulders.  Upon completion of the staining, planting may commence. Then it’s just a matter of days until the garden is complete!
